Mr. Shagam's First Fifty Years at Thacher
On Saturday, October 4, nearly 650 devotees of Marvin H. Shagam converged on Thacher's Upper Field to celebrate this great man's half century of teaching at The Thacher School.
On Saturday, October 4, nearly 650 devotees of Marvin H. Shagam converged on Thacher's Upper Field to celebrate this great man's half century of teaching at The Thacher School. From as far away as Brazil and England, alumni, their families, and other friends of the School gathered to pay homage to a mentor, teacher, and friend.

The evening commenced with an opportunity for guests to mingle with classmates, prefects, students, and parents of friends while reading the posted remembrances, well wishes, and legends that had been submitted by alumni and friends of Marvin. (A selection of these submissions can be found here.)
Dinner followed the mingling, and then, the real fun started. Alumni from three different decades and one Marvin's current colleagues delivered toasts. We caught a glimpse of Marvin through the decades. Randy Labbe CdeP 1960 described Marvin as he arrived on campus in 1958, and how students quickly learned that this new teacher was cut from a different cloth, one with threads of kindness, compassion, wit, and intelligence. Michael Kong CdeP 1983 relayed his first day on the Thacher campus, and his first night in the Upper School Dorm under Marvin's watch. His toast was complete with the best Marvin impression to date, and a hilarious interpretation of Marvin's first dorm meeting. Andrew Shakman CdeP 1990 followed with a description of Marvin's role in his Thacher career and beyond, with particular attention to his sage counsel for all situations. Joy Sawyer Mulligan gave the final toast, an affectionate portrait in words of the colleague she has come to know and respect over the past 26 years.
