Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

Thacher's new baseball diamond is ready for use!
Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, Thacher's Bard Field got a serious upgrade just in time for the spring baseball season. Work started on this project in late fall and was completed just in time for Thacher's home opener last Saturday. The project included:
  • Removing the top 24 inches of soil (mostly rock) with the installation of stone and sub-surface drainage and ultimately a new natural turf playing surface
  • Installation of new fencing.
  • New dugouts with the home dugout having storage and a small clubhouse area. Dugouts were outfitted with benches, bat racks, and helmet racks, and are open to the playing field.
  • Refrigerated water fountains with bottle-filling stations, one in each dugout and one behind the home dugout for fans.
  • A new sound system.
  • A collegiate-level batting cage with lights for night use.
  • New foul poles with wings.
  • Sunshaded seating for fans.
  • A grassy knoll seating area that we hope to shade soon.
The community is very excited for this much-needed renovation of one of Thacher's most beloved fields. The sport of baseball has a rich history at Thacher, reaching all the way back to the days of Sherman Day Thacher and the tradition of recess baseball on the Upper School Lawn.

Nobody is more excited about Bard Field's new look than the members of the 2015-2016 baseball team. Captain Eric Oregel '17 commented, "The finished product was better than anything I could've imagined. Of all the baseball fields I've played on in the 11 years I've played baseball, this is easily one of the nicest fields I've seen.... I truly believe that this baseball diamond is the jewel of the Frontier League and it is surely a compliment to the surrounding scenery."

Students, faculty, and friends made the trip down to the lower fields on Saturday afternoon to support the Thacher baseball team and enjoy a celebratory BBQ. In their home opener, the Toads christened the field with a 11-2 win over the Ojai Valley School.
