While most students ride Western-style, Thacher’s Equestrian Team offers interested students an alternative riding experience. The Equestrian Team is a hunt seat equitation program that allows both beginners and experienced riders to compete in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) against other high schools across California. Freshmen can choose to ride with the Equestrian Team two days a week; after freshman year, students can choose the Equestrian Team as their activity in the Afternoon Program for any season.

Throughout the season, the Equestrian Team travels up and down California to compete against other schools in the IEA. Both JV and Varsity levels compete on horses provided by the home team. Students are pushed to be able to adjust and adapt to any horse, leveling the playing field and truly testing the riders’ abilities. The points earned by riders at every level, from JV novice to Open Varsity, count equally toward the team’s final score—meaning every rider is an integral member of the team.
