Hal Holbrook Talks Twain

Joy Sawyer-Mulligan
Emmy- and Tony-Award winning legend of stage and screen Hal Holbrook spent an evening in our midst speaking as Mark Twain and Huckleberry Finn, offering his very personal--and passionate--State of the Union, and answering questions primarily from juniors who’d just closed the book on Huck and Jim.

The man whose genius and vigor created Mark Twain Tonight and who has played Samuel Clemens on stage thousands of times (and continues to do so) chose to talk little of his own craft and celebrity in the too short time, focusing instead on the world of Twain’s youth and the views the author came to hold on a variety of topics. After addressing the whole School community in the Milligan Center for the Performing Arts, Mr. Holbrook generously held forth for another half hour or so at a reception for faculty and 11th graders at the Head’s Home.

Thacher’s lucky link to the world-renowned actor? Annie Potts and Jim Hayman (parents of Harry ‘14), the former of whom acted alongside Holbrook’s wife, actress Dixie Carter, on the long-running television hit “Designing Women.” Harry did the honors of introducing his family friend.
