We firmly believe that every Thacher student has the ability to
lead. From the moment new students arrive on campus, we begin the
process of training them for leadership. The horse and camping
programs, student government, the Prefect system, athletics, the Honor
Code—these provide students with the chance to find the leader within
themselves.
Thacher relies heavily upon the leadership,
direction, and maturity of all seniors. Expected to set examples and
help others adjust to and thrive at School, seniors are asked to help
direct and administer many aspects of the School’s program. The School
Chair is elected by students in the spring of each year, and is the
student leader of the School. He or she also chairs the Community
Council, participates as a member of the Judicial Council, helps to run
Assemblies, and works closely with the administration to ensure that
the entire community is working together to achieve the goals for the
year.
Prefects are at the core of Thacher’s residential system.
These seniors are selected by the Dorm Council to help administer the
rules of the dorms and, more importantly, to serve as role models,
counselors, and advisors for other students. Prefects are chosen on the
basis of their maturity, judgment, common sense, and desire to work
with others.
In addition, there are many other leadership
positions that our older students hold. Some are team captains, some
help to run the dining hall and the Health Center, some plan the
weekend events, and some take on editorships of the school newspaper or
yearbook. There is a leadership position for any senior with the desire
and ability to contribute to the life of the School.
Whether
learning leadership or carrying it out, all students are expected to
take some responsibility for the welfare of the School.
