Why They Stay: The Psychology of Sex Trafficking

The covert nature of sex trafficking makes it a difficult crime to identify, and the most problematic issue of sex trafficking, next to the act itself, is society’s perception of victims as willing participants– and not as victims. I focus on the emotional ways in which victims are trapped and explore gaslighting tactics and psychological bonds, such as Stockholm Syndrome, that prevent victims from escaping. Finally, I follow a victim’s recovery treatment process and provide resources to how you can contribute to the battle against human trafficking.
Trigger Warning: discusses topics of rape, sexual assault, and suicide.
