Are you ready to begin an adventure?

We look for motivated, highly capable students who are prepared to commit their energies, talents, and personal integrity to a unique experience, one that will encourage them to focus on existing passions while also asking them to tackle a wide array of new challenges. And it all takes place in a rich community where honor, fairness, kindness, and truth are the touchstones and where racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic diversity is embraced. As you navigate the following deadlines and requirements, remember that the Thacher admission team is here to be your partner every step of the way.

  • Submit the Online Application

Thacher uses the Gateway to Prep Schools common application, which includes a Thacher-specific component. Students should complete and submit these online forms by January 15, accompanied by a $75 processing fee for families living within the U.S. or $125 for families living outside the U.S. If paying this fee presents a burden to your family, please contact us for a waiver. Candidates whose applications are completed by the January 15 deadline will receive the Admission Committee’s decision by mail on March 10. Late applications will be considered on a space-available basis.

Students applying via a sending organization’s application, including A Better Chance, SEEDs, Daniel Murphy, YES Scholars, TEAK, Breakthrough Collaborative, and Oliver’s Scholars, also need to complete our supplemental application, which is available here.

A note on our math requirement and curriculum. It is expected that every entering ninth grader will have completed a comprehensive Algebra 1 course that includes quadratics. Students enrolling who have only taken Pre-Algebra (Math 8 or equivalent) or Basic First Year Algebra (Math 1 or equivalent, which does not include extensive study of rational expressions, irrational numbers, and quadratic equations) will need to cover the required material in the spring or summer.
  • Complete the Required Testing

Students should register for and take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) in September, October, November, December, or January. Results of the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) may also be submitted. Applicants for the 11th grade may submit PSAT scores. International students for whom English is a second language must also complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam.

    • Thacher’s ISEE code: 052265

The Thacher School trains young men and women in the art of living for their own greatest good and for the greatest good of their fellow citizens in a diverse and changing world. In congruence with our mission, the application process places a premium on character and one’s potential to be a positive member of our community and beyond. With this in mind, we invite applicants to complete the Character Skills Snapshot, a tool that provides a more comprehensive understanding of one’s unique values. While it is not a required part of the application, we highly recommend it as an opportunity to highlight strengths in non-cognitive areas.

    For Home Schooled Applicants

The Thacher Admission Office welcomes home schooled applicants and encourages them to complete the standard application process.  However, in addition, we ask that each home schooled applicant submit the following:
    • One or two additional letters of recommendation from adults or teachers other than the child's parents
    • A statement of educational philosophy pertaining to your child's specific Home Schooling curriculum - please include any state law guidelines.
    • A 1-2 page course description or syllabi, similar to a transcript, for the last two years of home schooling

    For International Applicants
Thacher welcomes applications from students from around the world. International students should fill out the standard application, submit the $125 fee, and complete SSAT testing. We also highly recommend that international students for whom English is a second language complete the TOEFL exam (TOEFL code: 6955). Although we do conduct Skype interviews in extraordinary cases, students and their families are strongly encouraged to visit campus and complete their interviews in person. Families applying from overseas should be aware that Thacher does not offer financial aid to international students.

  • Visit our Campus

Call our Admission Office (805-640-3210) to schedule a campus visit and personal interview for a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning during the academic week. For a March 10 decision, your visit must be completed by January 31. Your application materials need to be completed by January 15.
  • Additional info: Day Students

Approximately 20 day students attend Thacher. Given the demands of our program, our policy is that a student must live in Ojai to apply as a day student.

International students and their families are strongly encouraged to visit campus and complete their interviews in person. Appointments are available between September and January. For families in China who cannot interview on campus, we ask that you make arrangements to interview with Vericant, a trusted organization we have partnered with that will conduct an interview and proctor a writing sample on our behalf. Vericant will then forward that information directly to us. Please note that while we conduct on-campus interviews through the end of January, the deadline to complete an interview with Vericant is December 15.

The moment we set foot on Thacher grounds, my son and I knew it was home. I felt I was entrusting him to a community of people who would guide and support him to be his best self. The faculty and staff are genuinely invested in the students. Although the distance seemed daunting at first, there’s no other place my son would rather be than enjoying life as a Thacher student!
