Noted political scientist Dr. Joseph Nye speaks at Thacher.
The Thacher and Ojai communities had a unique opportunity last Friday night to hear from noted political scientist Dr. Joseph Nye (grandfather of Else '20). The author of several books, including Is the American Century Over?, The Power to Lead, and The Future of Power, Dr. Nye has served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Chair of the National Intelligence Council, and Deputy Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science, and Technology. In a recent survey of international relations scholars, he was ranked as the most influential scholar on American foreign policy, and in 2011, Foreign Policy named him one of the top 100 Global Thinkers. In the words of Daniel Drezner, a professor of international politics at Tufts, “All roads to understanding American foreign policy run through Joe Nye."
On Friday evening Dr. Nye delivered a short talk on the state of American politics and our prospects for the future as a global power. Dr. Nye devoted the majority of his time to answering thought-provoking questions posed by Thacher students. The community was universally impressed with his clarity on these troubling and complicated topics.
Head of School Michael Mulligan said, "Dr. Nye's speech was a powerful example of how a deep understanding of history, politics, foreign affairs, and economics can provide one with a profound understanding of world events today. He explained and analyzed complex topics simply and clearly without being simplistic or political. One of the best speeches ever here at Thacher."
