The Music Man

Despite time crunch, The Thacher Masquers successfully stage the award-winning classic.
A few weeks before opening night, if you had asked a member of the cast or crew about this year’s musical, you might not have received a particularly confident response.

“We entered rehearsals for The Music Man with a serious disadvantage: We had already lost at least two weeks of rehearsals to the Thomas Fire,” remembers Tracey Williams Sutton, director of the production. “When putting on a musical of this magnitude, that is daunting, to say the least.”

But when the curtain rose on opening night, any lingering doubts were quickly dispelled. Strong performances, vibrant costumes and sets, and impressive singing and dancing all came together on February 9 and 10 for an engaging, fun, and memorable production that showcased the many talents of the group.

“Despite losing time to the Thomas Fire, the cast was able to stay focused and put together (what I thought to be) a fantastic performance,” agreed Jeffrey Ding ’18, who played the character of Harold Hill. “To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect when we first started rehearsals, but the energy of the cast and the enthusiasm shared by everyone made it an unforgettable experience!”

“I saw the beauty of the community coming together to make it happen,” added Ms. Sutton. “The administration gave us extra time, the faculty and crew were supportive regarding sports and meals, and the students themselves worked tirelessly to be ready for the performance. It is a beautiful example of what a team can do. I am grateful to everyone for the true dedication and heart that went into this production.”

Jeffrey, who is approaching the last few months of his senior year, also mused: “Despite having had no musical theater experience until joining Oklahoma! my junior year, being part of the performing arts program at Thacher has given me a passion that I would never have discovered otherwise and that I will love for the rest of my life.”

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to another fantastic performance!
