The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognize one of our own.
Every year, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to talented young students. This year, out of a submission pool of more than 347,000 works from around the country, Thacher’s own Sarah Liu ’20 received regional awards for her photography submissions, recognizing her unique talents and personal vision.
One of Sarah’s works was awarded the Gold Key (given to “the very best works submitted to local programs”) and, as such, will be automatically considered for national-level recognition. Two of her photographs were awarded the Silver Key (given for “stand-out works submitted to local programs that demonstrate exceptional ability”), and four more received Honorable Mention.
“I began taking photos three years ago, out of pure interest,” said Sarah about her growing passion for photography. “All I wanted was to record the beauty around me and the memorable moments in my life. I find my photos bringing me a sense of accomplishment that I cannot find anywhere else.”
“I have not yet taken a photography course, but our photography teacher, Ms. Yates, has been very supportive of me and has advised me all along. I am not in her photography course but I could find her anytime I needed to. I was not confident about my photos, but she encouraged me to enter the contest. Winning these awards was beyond my expectation, but it built up my faith in myself and my faith in continuing to pursue photography.”
She concluded: “There are times when we should give things a try—we never know what we may gain.”
