Thacher girls' cross country team earned the number one spot at the Brentwood Small Schools Invitational tournament this past Saturday, and the boys’ team came in second.

Sophomore Karina Andersen, finished third in the pack of 85 runners with a 19:56:00 on the three-mile run and junior Barkley Bennett, finished fifth. The Toads had five runners in the top 15 while the next closest school had three.

Coach Sarah DelVecchio is excited about the prospects for this year’s team. “The girls’ team is especially strong this year and has a lot of depth,” she said. “We're lucky that the girls are committed to working hard and supporting each other. In fact, one of the things I am most proud of with this team is the positive attitude of each athlete. Our captains, Caroline DelVecchio and Lily Harding, are dedicated to the program and to supporting all members of the team. Under their leadership, we are looking to make it to the state finals in Fresno. We are also seeing incredible improvements from a few of our athletes, notably  Karina Anderson and Barkley Bennett, our top two runners.”

The runners echo her sentiment, “The team culture is fantastic – everyone shows up and wants to work hard and support each other, and that makes it super fun to be at practice every day. It's awesome to have everyone improving and caring about what we're doing,” shared co-captain, Lily Harding ’19.

The first league meet will be held this Thursday, September 27, in Ventura, followed by the Twilight Meet Saturday, October 6 at Lake Casitas.
