From the beginning of the game, it was clear that we were the stronger team.
The Toads enjoyed a big win at home on Saturday against the Blair squad. This was our Family Weekend, and we were happy to have the opportunity to give meaningful playing time to all of our healthy players, including freshmen.
From the beginning of the game, it was clear that it was not Blair's day. Our defense completely stifled them on their first possession, and it was obvious that they could not match up with us in size, speed, or discipline. We forced a quick punt and went to work on offense. We executed poorly on our first two passing plays, but on our third play from scrimmage, junior QB*/CB Mike Sanderson got loose for a 57 yard rushing touchdown. After that first possession, we recovered an onside kick and immediately tightened up on our execution on offense. We scored long touchdowns via a catch by senior running back RB/LB JJ Mazzola, another catch by senior WR/CB Alika Williams, a punt return by senior RB/LB Preston Brailer, and a long run by Mazzola. Early in the second quarter, we led 38-0.
For the remainder of the game, some of our less experienced players had the opportunity to get onto the field, and they played effectively. Notably strong defensive play came from junior G/LB Tommy Brittingham, freshman RB/DE Henry Mallory, freshman C/LB Kye Harned, senior TE/CB Trevor Duggins, and senior WR/CB Brooks Walker, who logged an interception in the second half. Late in the game, we added touchdowns by junior RB/CB Bryan Yoo and freshman TE/OLB Joaquin Cardoza to reach our final score of 52-0.
We look forward to a big matchup against the Cate Rams next Saturday at home. It should be a great game, and it will wrap up our regular-season pursuits for the 2018 season.
