Steven Earns Eagle Scout Ranking

His community service project involved creating a drought tolerant garden.
Congratulations to Thacher Senior, Steven '19, who has earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Steven planned, developed, and oversaw the installation of a drought tolerant garden at a church in Pomona, California as his required service project. He shared that the awareness of California’s water shortage and focus on sustainability here at Thacher influenced his project selection.

The journey to Eagle Scout was long, but filled with fun and adventure. During his seven years in Scouting, Steven earned 40 merit badges. He got lots of support from Thacher faculty members Ms. Hooper and Ms McMahon over the past few years. “Sophomore year, Ms. Hooper asked me to be the den chief for her troop, so I could fulfill my leadership requirement. And, Ms. McMahon helped by giving me permission to attend meetings during study hall. I couldn’t have gotten here without their help. I’m really grateful.”

Steven’s experiences in Scouting influenced his decision to attend Thacher in two ways. First, he knew that he’d be able to continue with the types of outdoor activities that he had enjoyed in Scouting. And that experience with camping prepared him for Thacher: “I thrived in the outdoor program. Thacher’s trips were more challenging, but freshman year, instead of counting the days till the trip was over, I could help my friends.” Second, he saw a parallel between the moral values and principles of Scouting and Thacher’s code of honor, fairness, kindness, and truth.

What’s next now that he’s reached the pinnacle of the Scouting experience? Steven wants to volunteer at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia this summer, and he plans to help his brother Bryan ’20 on his own Eagle Scout project.
