It’s Not Just for the LatinX Community
People from across the Thacher community remembered and celebrated their loved ones during Dia de los Muertos.
“My Nana would love to keep your mother company,” was the note one student wrote when she submitted a photo to Maria Morales-Kent for the Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda (Day of the Dead Altar). Ms. Morales-Kent encouraged the whole Thacher community to submit photos for the altar because, “Thacher is our family. All those people we’ve lost in our lives should be part of this family celebration,” she said.
Responding to her invitation for deceased loved ones to join Ms. Morales-Kent’s mother on the altar, members from across the Thacher community participated. Students, faculty, and staff submitted photos and students created decorative frames during Open House last weekend. “When the kids learned whose family member or friend was in the photo, they took special care with their projects. This has given us all a chance to talk with our friends and colleagues about our loved ones. That’s the point of this holiday: to remember and honor those we’ve lost.”
Ms. Morales-Kent expects the celebration here at Thacher to continue to grow over time.
