Grandparents and Special Friends Days 2020

Class time, shared meals, and entertainment filled the days as students welcomed beloved guests to their school.
Survey says: “The highlight was spending time with my grandchild.”

Any day a grandparent gets to spend with grandkids is a good one, especially if it also means learning about the Thacher Horse Program and watching Toad athletes compete in sports. Such was the 2020 edition of Grandparents and Special Friends Day.

This year, the event was scheduled adjacent to the Winter Musical, Into the Woods, so several grandparents arrived early to catch the Saturday night performance. Guests also enjoyed classes with their students, Assembly with a demonstration of Bachata dance, golf cart tours of campus, and of course, delicious meals in the new Mulligan Hall. The Jazz Band and Chamber Singers entertained diners during Sunday dinner and Ms. Pidduck welcomed the group.

After walking the hilly campus for several hours on Monday, many of the elders relaxed in the Milligan Center for the “Get to Know Thacher!” program: Four seniors reflected on their education and experiences here; Director of Studies Tracy Miller shared the future of Thacher’s curriculum; Director of Enrollment and Planning Bill McMahon detailed how Thacher is positioned to help kids thrive and succeed; and, Dr. Swift, Thacher’s astronomy program director, held a casual meet-and-greet to talk about our world-class observatory and student astronomy program.

Newly appointed Director of the Horse Program Trinity Seely CdeP 1999 added an in-depth look at the Horse Program to the schedule. She went over the program’s history and Dr. Kris Finch, our resident veterinarian, offered an overview of equine care. Riders than presented a mini-demo of cow herding and other riding skills and Ms. Nutting CdeP 2014 showed the group how to pack a horse for a camping trip. The strong positive feedback from guests indicates Ms. Seely might have started a new tradition for Grandparents and Special Friends Days.
