Sports are Back!

Last year, Thacher adapted to Covid guidelines by offering more opportunities for non-contact sports. This year with the reintroduction of interscholastic games, volleyball has become one of the most popular sports at Thacher, with the creation of additional teams and back-to-back victories by the Girls Varsity Volleyball team.
Last year, Thacher adapted to Covid guidelines by offering more opportunities for non-contact sports such as yoga, surfing, and rock climbing but for those players yearning for teamwork, they adapted by playing one another. Cross class and cross gender games carried student athletes through the 2020-2021 school year and it has proved to be a successful tool in 2021 as we enter back into rival games.

The first game back to campus was the Girls Varsity Volleyball game against Providence High School, which ended with a victory and was followed with another victory against Dunn. Girls Varsity Head Coach and Fisher Fellow, Ms. Trejo, attributes the wildly successful games to their Covid Volleyball League and the outstanding student leadership this year. Covid provided an interesting alternative for the Girls Volleyball teams to practice with the typically larger and taller Boys Volleyball team. Ms. Trejo describes the team as scrappy and attentive, with great serving styles and an eagerness to get in as many ‘touches.’

Ms. Trejo shared that this year the team will live and breathe Honor, Truth, and Leadership

Honor - Players are expected to show respect not only to the game referees and one another but to their opponents. ‘Trash talk’ or poor sportsmanship is not welcomed on the court or in the locker room.

Truth - If a player stepped offsides, tipped a ball on its way off court, or grazed the net on a spike but it was not called by a ref, they are expected to call themselves out and hold each other accountable, regardless of what that means for the scoreboard.

Leadership - With Ms. Trejo being new to Thacher this season, the Senior girls stepped up tremendously in their leadership roles. The teammates unanimously voted seniors Lauren M, Daisy G, and Christina M as team captains. They have all taken on important roles of helping run drills, leading group huddles, and being a support system for the JV and Frosh players.

Even though non-contact sports have become a mainstay at Thacher, Volleyball interest has steadily risen. This year alone Thacher Sports has expanded to add on a Freshman/Sophomore Girls Volleyball team, a Spring Girls Sand Volleyball team, and a Spring Boys Indoor Volleyball team.
