Community Service at Thacher Thriving within Ojai Community

How much impact can seven students have in a local community? Plenty, if one asks the Thacher Community Service afternoon activity group.

“The community service program uplifts the community in a way we’ve never seen before. Especially with this smaller group of volunteers, we’re able to maintain important connections with organizations that the School is going to work with for decades to come,” says Thacher senior Milo L.

Each weekday during the afternoon activity period, Thacher’s Community Service group assists a different local organization under the supervision of Ms. Stephanie Thomas, director of academic support. A partial list of the organizations in the area include Topa Topa Elementary School, Monica Ross School, Humane Society of Ventura County, Help of Ojai, OVLC Film Festival, Ojai Turtle Conservancy, and the Ojai Food Pantry.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group had to operate on Thacher’s campus out of an abundance of caution. This limited their overall impact, but it also was the catalyst to ramp up efforts for a broad presence in the larger Ojai community.

“I got involved (with Community Service) because I was interested in finding ways to help the community. I know everyone at Thacher, including myself, will benefit from it,” senior Chao T. explained.
