The Impact of Colorism on America's Black Community

Description: Colorism is the theory that, within a people of color, those of lighter skin tones lie highest on the socially prescribed racial hierarchy. This then grants them more societal and economic privileges. Within America’s black community, colorism has been running rampant since the introduction of slavery in the country. Though many are unaware of its presence, colorism affects who we see on television or on the news, people’s income, and even marriage rates. Learn about how this toxic phenomenon came to be, how it manifests today, and how we can aid in its mitigation.
