I’m the assistant head of school for student life.
What my students call me
Ms. McMahon, “The Man,” “the person who knows everything!”
I knew I wanted to work at Thacher when
We arrived in late March from the east coast with the orange blossom scent surrounding the campus and then spent our time here interacting with students in an incredibly positive and engaging way.
Favorite Thacher teaching moment
At the end of the year, a student shared that while he didn’t think he would benefit from some of the emotional support resources at the School, my weekly (and sometimes annoying) reminder emails every Monday actually turned out to be most helpful!
Favorite job perk
Interacting with students day in and day out. Never a day goes by without a student sharing something that makes me smile.
Most memorable Thacher camping trip
Kayaking from one remote beach campsite to the next on Santa Catalina Island.
Since you asked me to brag, here's the professional accomplishment I'm most proud of
Being a dean of students for 15 years—not typical!
Favorite place at Thacher
Running on the trails.
When not in the classroom I can be found
Reading at the beach and paddle boarding on the ocean.
The book, movie, work of art, or piece of music I cannot imagine life without
Gone with the Wind, book and movie.
Hardly anybody knows that
What I wanted to be when I grew up (when I was 10)
An Olympic gymnast.
What I want to be when I grow up (now)
Working in an underprivileged school and volunteering to teach/tutor math.
