The boys’ basketball program has the benefits of stellar coaching; a classic, old-school gym that features a gorgeous, new floor; and a committed school community that regularly fills the gym with energy, excitement, and support for its teams. Each year, the boys' varsity basketball team plays a tough non-league schedule to prepare for the tight competition of the Frontier League. Focusing on skillful execution, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the tenacity to overcome any challenge, students find success and growth on the court, win or lose. About those wins, though: Voit Gym holds memories of countless victories, and Thacher’s boys' basketball history is filled with many league championships and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoff berths.
The varsity team has won multiple league titles in recent years and made ten consecutive trips to the CIF playoffs. In 2007, 2008, and 2013, the team advanced to the CIF quarterfinal round—each time pulling off huge upsets along the way—and in all three instances, Thacher was eventually eliminated by the #1 seed. The 2007 squad reached the CIF Division VA Final Four.
Recent Thacher graduates have continued playing basketball for the following Division III colleges: Carnegie Mellon, Kenyon, Pomona-Pitzer, and Swarthmore.
Jason has a long association with the sport of basketball and began coaching Thacher’s varsity team in 2002. He appreciates that Friday night home games are a huge community event and provide an electric atmosphere in Voit gymnasium. In addition to having received league honors, Jason is a CIF Coach of the Year recipient for California's Southern Section; however, more importantly, he treasures the relationships he maintains with former players.
