Students Embrace Equity Work
It’s been an active fall for Thacher’s affinity and allyship groups.
Students from a wide range of backgrounds and identities continue to demonstrate their commitment to equity and justice work at Thacher.
Six students attended the annual (and for the first time, virtual) NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference titled New Decade, New Destinies: Challenging Self, Changing Systems, and Choosing Justice and 27 students joined the day-long, virtual SpeakOut Youth Summit on equity and justice. Meanwhile, members of the many Thacher affinity groups have been actively supporting each other throughout a tumultuous year. In support of those groups, Thacher has programmed into its schedule regular meeting times for these student groups and advisors.
White students interested in becoming allies and accomplices in this work have a new way to participate. Guided by the Association of White Anti-Racist Educators (AWARE) which was established two years ago, students have created their own White Students Against Racism group to investigate and practice allyship and solidarity with marginalized groups.
