With sunny skies and warm weather in the forecast, students and faculty eagerly departed Thacher's gates for their weekend wilderness adventures. While camping has a rich history at the School, the schedule in recent years, packed with irresistible events, has made it difficult at times to get away. The Winter Camping Weekend, now in its fourth year, was started by former School Chair Joe Bell CdeP 2012 in an effort to give the community that much-needed time to reconnect with each other and nature.
In an effort to make a little time in the schedule, Winter Caming Weekend is a closed, homework-free weekend meant to encourage students to take a trip they might otherwise not make time to take. For those who stayed on campus, it was a good weekend to catch up on work and sleep. Additionally, students involved in the cast and crew of the upcoming winter musical Legally Blonde (February 12 and 13) squeezed in some extra rehearsal time.
Sign-ups were informal with many students gathering a group of friends and setting up a trip with a faculty member. The trips included: running down the sand dunes of Death Valley, skiing the Sugar Bowl and Mount Piños, beach camping at El Capitan and Montaña de Oro, and horse camping at Patton's Cabin followed by the ride home over the ridge. Peter Callan '16 and Liam Kirkpatrick '17 elected to run and mountain bike (repsectively) from Thacher to Patton's Cabin. A and B campers and horse campers took faculty-less trips—one of the privileges of their rank—to the Sespe, while other students took a training trip with hopes of earning A or B camper rankings.
