Highlights and awards from the winter athletic season.
As the weather warms and the days begin to lengthen again, we close the chapter on another great athletic season. Director of Athletics Pete Fagan remarks:One theme that comes to mind as I reflect on the countless games I watched this winter is how hard our teams competed. In every sport, at every level, the teams that took the floor or pitch were prepared and gave 100 percent effort in every contest. With that in mind, I’d like to highlight a few of our achievements.
Three out of our four varsity teams qualified for the post season. The boys' basketball team finished third in a very balanced and competitive league. The girls' basketball team made it to the playoffs but lost in the first round. The team has a fine young core of players returning next season, so the future is bright for girls' basketball. The last (but not least) team to qualify for CIF was the girls' soccer team, which played inspired soccer all season long. The team made it to the third round of the playoffs when they succumbed to St. Anthony's of Long Beach–which went on to the semifinal round of the CIF-Southern Section.
Overall, our Toads showed great dedication to their athletic teams this winter, often spending extra time on the court or the field to further hone and develop their skills. Our student-athletes excel in every sport because of their commitment to excellence. They work hard, try hard, compete hard, but most importantly of all, they care. I love watching these kids and feel proud watching them represent Thacher!
Go Toads!

League Record: 2-8-1
Season Record: 2-8-1
MVP: Stefanie Lueders '19
MIP: Yosephina Peters '18
Team Spirit Award: Yosephina Peters '18, Sydney de Polo '17
Season highlights:
It was a great season for the JV girls, with dramatic improvement over the course of the few months we had together. Sydney de Polo '17 was incredible in the goal, with numerous diving saves and general penalty box dominance. Olivia Edmondson '18, Caroline DelVecchio '19, and Gaby Sierra '18 anchored a strong central defense while Nicole Bassolino '18, Emily Hildago '18, and Grace Zhang '19 were stalwart defenders on the outside. Samantha Hollins '19 made a late-season shift into the defensive end after playing forward for much of the season and had some sensational moments in the last couple of games. Abby Romo '19 played almost every position on the field with panache, and Margaret Phipps '19 also lent her skills to all areas of the field save the goal. When our goalie opted for the ski slopes instead of the soccer pitch for a game, Georgia Driscoll '19 performed admirably in her stead, though the team missed her ferocious presence as a striker. In the middle of the field, Stef Leuders '19 and Lulu Patterson '19 were a powerful pair, but when Lulu was called up to the varsity, Willa Hancock '18, a relative neophyte, showed incredible skill and hustle. Our starting wing midfielders of May Walton '18 and Pria Koll '18 were steady, strong performers, and when they needed a break we could always count on the fiery Maddy Moore '19 and the lightning-fast Alice Tang '19 to hold down the edges. Up front, Yosefina Peters '18 seemed to always be moving at top speed, and Maya Wendel '19, who came to the position late in the season, proved herself to be one of our most talented forwards. Emmy Daro '19 also showed some flashes of brilliance in her substitute moments on attack.
In our game against Grace Brethren, Stef Leuders '19 split open her brow in a collision, but she calmly walked to the sideline with a smile despite the blood and terrified looks from teammates and opponents alike. “A scar would be cool,” she was overheard saying. A dance party broke out after the 0-1 loss. Yosefina Peters '18 and Stef accounted for the two goals in our vengeful victory over Cate in the last contest of the season, Yosefina on a breakaway (our first goal in 9 games) and Stef on a freekick from 25 yards. Caroline DelVecchio '19 pulled off the “Bejeezus” a flip throw-in during the same game.

Season highlights:
● The three games of the season (nonleague) against Nordhoff, Laguna Blanca and Cate were intense and the team, with all players, played a fun type of soccer along with perseverance and heart. We tied against Nordhoff and Cate and won, in overtime, to Laguna Blanca.
● Being a young team (half of the team were sophomores) it was difficult to compete with larger schools and physically bigger teams. However, the coaches are excited about the talent that both the varsity and JV programs are developing for the upcoming years.
● It was an intense season for everyone, both physically and emotionally. Ryan Jackson, our main striker, got hurt in the first game if the league competition and that affected our goal scoring capabilities for the rest of the season. The fast paced schedule did not help with skills development and made the kids super tired to the point that we mostly work to recover the player for future games.
● A highlight of the season was the evolution of our sophomore goalie: Griffin O ́Neill. He worked hard at every practice and that was reflected in his improvement. The fact that Mr. Daniel Murillo, a goalie coach from Ojai, joined us halfway thru the season to help Griffin and Toto (the other goalie) improve their game made a big difference. The coaches are excited to continue seeing his evolution. One of Griffin’s most memorable highlights was when he blocked a penalty kick against Santa Clara High School. This block gave Griffin a big boost of confidence and as well as the team.
● Our home game against Santa Clara was a roller coaster. Emotions ran high and low in different segments of the game. We failed to capitalize on one of our many scoring opportunities. Clearly we were the better team but we just couldn’t score. We were down 21 nearing the end of the second half. Our starting goalkeeper, Toto Van Son, was taken out of the goal and placed in the field as a striker. Toto went on to score the tying goal to send the game into overtime. One of the players least expected to score came through for the team when most needed. Unfortunately we lost in overtime, but Toto was able to end his soccer playing career at Thacher with a goal in his senior year.

Season highlights:
In our second year of higher competition in the Frontier League, the JV boys were very
competitive, even vs. best-in-league Fillmore. These players improved greatly throughout the season, beating St Bonaventure 5-0 after losing to them earlier 1-3, for example. Most of the novice players developed fundamentally sound technique, which allowed them to enjoy the game more fully. Five or six of these JV players will contend for a spot on the varsity team next winter.
One of the best qualities of this group was resilience in the face of adversity. In our second Villanova game the team got off to a slow start and was scored on in the 4th minute by a very impressive goal by an excellent player. At that point it would have been easy to lose heart and go through the motions, but the boys responded in a positive and vigorous manner, soon taking control of the game and winning 9-2 (the first game with ‘Nova was very close). As a group this was a very coachable team, which was in large measure the reason for greater than expected improvement by even the most experienced players, who do not usually improve as much as beginners.
All in all: a wonderfully positive, rewarding season.

Season highlights: Our record is not a true reflection of the success and progress the team made over the course of the winter season. Our team of 25 girls played hard, improved drastically, became more confident players, and had fun with each other daily throughout the season. Our biggest challenge was starting the games warmed up and ready to play. By the third quarter and without fail, they would find their stride, momentum, and fire. When this team was playing at its highest level, it could challenge better teams in the league. Besides our two wins, we also had a close game against OVS at the start of the season, and against Fillmore at the end of the season. As the season progressed, our offensive game and shooting improved, and our defense strengthened. Sammie Muckle '16, Sam Baird '16, Libby Kern '17 and Alex Varon '17 were the team’s high scorers this season. Annie Everett '17 our point guard led the players on the court and was a vital player in our games. Shalan Billault-Lee '18 and Annie Langan '18 fronted our press and were given the task of guarding the opponents’ best players; these two tenacious players were a force to be reckoned with. Sammie Muckle '16 played tough defense in the paint and Sam Baird '16 would shock opponents
with her shot blocks on defense.
Other highlights include our game against Villanova: our first win 30-8, Zoe Huang '18 was our leading scorer with 8 points. Seven players scored and a newfound confidence emerged within the players that they carried with them moving forward into the season. Carpinteria: We outscored Carp 9-5 in the fourth quarter. Our defense stepped up to hold them to 5 points and Libby Kern '17 scored all 9 points. Fillmore: Our first game against Fillmore we lost 11-35. At the end of the season we were down to 9 players and gave Fillmore a strong effort 31-51 with close scores in the 3rd quarter. Libby Kern '17 had another great game scoring 12 points. Villanova @home: Our second win of the season, Elizabeth Zhang hit a 3-pointer in the last game of her high school career. The Thacher crowd erupted in excitement. There were countless memorable moments throughout the season that left me smiling, proud, and honored to be their coach.
Great season ladies!

1st Team All Frontier League: Laurence Jackson '17
2nd Team All Frontier League: Cole Anderson '16, Pierre Weil '17
Honorable mention: Jackson Carroll '17
Season highlights:
● Outstanding leadership from captains
○ Laurence Jackson '17 was the anchor of the defense...also averaged 11
rebounds/game which is very impressive
○ Pierre Weil '17 stepped up and was incredible at the point guard spot, taking over from his brother Mitch CdeP 2015
○ Cole Anderson '16 was great offensively...has built on his progress over the past two seasons and turned himself into a impact player on offensive end.
● Game #2 (12/8) v. Nordhoff HS Result: 34-32 (Win)
● Game #10 (1/15) v. Cate Result: 50-48 (Win)
● Had to take a ferry to Catalina Island for first round of playoffs and played a great game Game #19 (2/17) v. Avalon Result: 45-42 (Win)
● 7 out of 12 players were first time varsity players, which speaks to great leadership of the returners and captains. We achieved a lot considering how much experience we lacked.
Boys' JV Basketball
Coaches: Chris Thomas, Bill Omansiek
Captains: Marc Jiang '16, Jahmari Josiah '16, John Kern '16, Griffin Sohn '16, Santi Vargas Garcia '16
League Record: 1-9
Season Record: 1-10
Seniors: Marc Jiang, Jahmari Josiah, John Kern, Griffin Sohn, Santi Vargas Garcia
Season highlights:
We beat Cate in a nail-biter at home for our lone win of the season.
Marc Jiang '16 and Christopher Robinson '18 were our most consistent offensive threats. We relied heavily on them to generate offense for us.
Reese Proctor '17 was our best rebounder and helped us a lot on defense. His tenacity helped set the tone in our contests.
Griffin Sohn '16 made huge shots for us all year, especially in the Villanova game on the road when he hit three 3-pointers in a row. He also stepped up and played valuable minutes as a point guard and made sure we were running a play every time down the court.
Braden Roh '17 was a huge asset on both sides of the court because of his willingness to talk to his teammates and make sure everyone was positioned correctly in our zone defense and when we ran plays on offense.
Connor Callahan '18 used his athleticism to generate early offense for us. His ability to push the ball down the court with speed was incredibly valuable given how hard it was to generate points consistently in the half court.
I really appreciated Santi Vargas Garcia’s '16 leadership on the team. He was unselfish, positive and competitive.
Jahmari Josiah '16 proved to be valuable as a tough on ball defender. His lateral quickness gave the opposing guards fits.
Grayson Hodge '18 was a late add on. But he made himself valuable by sharing knowledged he’d learned from the varsity team with our players, including an offensive set we installed and ran towards the end of the season.
Tobi Oyinlola '17 made huge strides as a post defender. He was always near the loose ball.
Edison Chadwick '18 didn’t play often, but in practice I could rely on him to know our plays because he paid attention. He was very coachable, which meant a lot to Bill and me.
I used John Kern '16 at the center of our offense at the high post when playing against a zone defense because of his great vision. With the ball in his hands he could see the entire court and make the right pass or take the shot if not challenged.
Bob Farrelly '17 was injured for a much of the season, and like Edison didn’t play much. But when he did, I loved the energy and enthusiasm he played with.
Freshman Boys' BasketballCoaches: Pete Fagan, Kevin Berigan
League Record: 2-2
Season Record: 2-2
MVP: Alika Williams '19
MIP: Steven Yoo "19
Season highlights: Playing a limited schedule with limited practices, these boys were indoctrinated into the Thacher hoop culture. The culminating game of the season was a real intra-squad scrimmage with refs and timekeepers. In a back and forth game, the green team, led by Jason Kim ‘19 was victorious. Many of these boys improved greatly and we look forward to their contributions next year.
