Juniors Dive Into the College Process
Thacher hosts annual Case Studies and College Fair event.
Recently, 46 deans and directors from college and university admissions offices across the country (and even across the pond, with University of St. Andrews, Scotland in attendance) convened on the Thacher campus to chat with juniors about the college process. This annual event, co-hosted by Cate School and Thacher, alternates campus locations each year and offers students entering into the process a glimpse at the types of decisions that go into evaluating candidates.
The program asks each junior to play the part of an admission officer. Students receive four mock applications and must read them and decide who they want to admit. When they arrive for Case Studies, they are paired with other students and a dean or director to create a mock admissions committee. With their fellow committee members, they then decide who to admit, who to deny, and who to waitlist, with the caveat that only one can be admitted.
This year, Thacher invited juniors from Nordhoff High School as well. After talking through the mock files, students and the college representatives head outside for an hour long college fair, which gives students a great opportunity to learn more about schools from all over the country.
