Breaking Clear Away

Students and faculty escape to the wilderness.
Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.
- John Muir quoted by Samuel Hall Young in Alaska Days with John Muir

Last week students and faculty departed for the second of our annual week-long camping trips known as Extra-Day Trips (EDTs). These EDTs take members of our community far afield for a little adventure, R&R, and time reconnecting with nature. This year's trips fell between the closing weeks of school and final exams—a perfect time to get away from it all for just a little while.

Unlike in the fall when students are assigned to trips, students—with upper classes getting priority—get to choose their spring trips. Trips this year included sea kayaking around the Catalina coast, bikepacking from the mountains down to the ocean, flyfishing on the Kern River, bouldering through the Sespe Narrows, horsepacking in the snowy Sierra, and many more.
