Cowboy Racers

Thacher cowboys test their mettle in Extreme Cowboy Competition.
Director of the Horse Program Cam Schryver and two student riders traveled to Leona Valley, California last weekend to compete in an Extreme Cowboy Race Competition. Sarah Finch '18 and Evan Jackson '17 rode in several of these EXCA (Extreme Cowboy Association) events this summer in order to earn points to qualify for the World Finals coming up in October.

This event was the final competition in the state of California before the World Finals. Sarah and Evan placed first and second (respectively) in their class, earning them enough points to qualify! Sarah's first place finish also earned her the title of State Champion. Cam competed–and won–in the pro division also earning the title of State Champion Cowboy Racer.

Faculty member Dr. Kristen Finch (parent of Sarah '18) commented, "The kids couldn't have come as far as they have without excellent coaching and mentoring by Cam. Both Sarah and Evan also owe a lot to brave horses with big hearts, who trust their rider without question. There is absolutely no reason for a horse to go over, around, or through what they are asked to do in an EXCA course." Some of the obstacles in the event included: a barrel jump, riding through a covered wagon, a water box, a dead man dummy drag, swinging suspension bridge, and many more.

We look forward to seeing what these horse and rider duos can accomplish at the Word Finals next month!
