The US has always had a unique cultural and legal commitment to the freedom of speech and expression, as outlined in the First Amendment of its constitution. But there is increasing public anxiety today surrounding whether freedom of expression is a de jure ideal or a de facto bottom line for our educational institutions. How do we reinstate a climate that promotes free and productive debate at Thacher?
