What Does a Woman Need to do to Win the Presidency?

Women have had the right to vote since 1920, yet over a hundred years later, a woman has yet to make it into the highest office. This is not because women haven't tried – female candidates have been nominated for President by a major political party twice in both 2016 and 2024, but just haven’t been able to pull off a win. Female candidates face an electoral dilemma that is unlike a man’s. A woman needs to demonstrate sufficient strength and leadership without compromising the dignity and grace Americans expect from women. Despite gains in political representation, Female presidential candidates are evaluated through a gender-scrutinizing lens of “a woman first, candidate second” that creates voter bias on trust and electability.
This presentation will explore how appearance, authenticity, media coverage, and policy positioning are evaluated through a gendered lens that ultimately defines who America sees as fit to lead. The question is no longer whether women are ready for the presidency, but whether the presidency is ready for a woman.
