The Invisible Price Tag On Modern Relationships

The headline, “Dating is dying,” reflects the belief that fewer people are going into relationships for long-term companionship and instead entering relationships for short-term gain. Economics have always impacted romance, so modern consumeristic values are impacting the way we value people. How does consumerism impact relationships? As the U.S. becomes increasingly consumeristic, how will relationships change? Marketing, social media, and dating apps normalize receiving fulfillment without giving much time or effort. So the consumption of this media prompts transactional relationships. As businesses continue expanding into areas of life that may seem personal, emotional, or private, they further promote the love being displayed and upgraded. Relationships built on these values are not truly fulfilling, so romance will not “die”, but it will be harder to find authentic connections.
