AI and the Future of Meaning

Recent development in artificial intelligence (AI) technology brought both existential concerns and hopes of an age of prosperity. While today’s Large Language Models such as ChatGPT or Gemini will not become threatening superintelligece by themselves, an AI-driven automation revolution will bring mass unemployment and help the powerful monopolize the wealth. How can humanity find purpose amidst this tumult if socially recognized values no longer provide achievement and fulfillment? In other words, if AI becomes a more talented employee, friend, and thinker than you, how will you matter in this world and find your own meaning? Contributing to society through labor, original work, or entertainment will be difficult as highly capable AI render the majority—besides the few in the executive roles leveraging these AI tools—“unemployable.” Meaningful work is necessary for a strong perceived sense of purpose and autonomy, yet effective implementation of universal basic income-like policies or creation of new jobs are unlikely. For the displaced majority, two main outcomes exist: occupy oneself with artificial entertainment, or find meaning in nonmaterial values such as human connection.
