Locked Up, Left Behind What lasting psychological and social effects does incarceration have on people of color?

Black and POC individuals are disproportionately represented in the United States criminal justice system, as the United States ranks number 5 globally for the highest incarceration rate. The historical effects of The War on Drugs exacerbated the preexisting discrimination efforts of the Jim Crow era, increasing racialized policing and furthering economic disadvantages in disenfranchised communities. These issues primarily stem from failed communities that were victims of discriminatory policing efforts during Jim Crow, and have been environmentally stunted due to a lack of structural resources, quality education, a stable labor market, and successful rehabilitation programs to counteract criminal and delinquent behavior. The incarceration system has failed due to a disproportionate and unjust criminal justice system. From these issues, a deeper, fundamental question remains: does race continue to shape outcomes within the criminal justice system?
