A Crash Course in Guerrilla Warfare

What makes an effective guerrilla organization? A guerrilla is a warfighter who is a local national in his theatre who uses unconventional tactics to defeat a larger, conventional force. Guerrilla organizations typically take the form of a larger, apparently legitimate, political entity which supports, through propaganda and material, an illicit network of guerrillas or series of networks. The ultimate goal of a guerrilla group is peculiar to its historical moment; however, they always seek to remove from power a militarily superior force. In some cases, the motive is revolutionary, in others, it can be to maintain a status quo. Guerrilla organizations accomplish this goal either by destroying the political legitimacy of the occupiers, or by decisively defeating its forces. This can be done, even in situations where the occupying force is vastly superior, because the guerrilla group maintains the initiative through operational tempo, intelligence, mobility, and information warfare.
