Thacher Magazine: Home is Where the Quesadillas Are
On most Friday or Saturday evenings throughout the school year, you’ll find a small group of students and faculty working together to throw a party. Spikeball, ping-pong, board and video games, movies, and music are always on the activities list. Quesadillas, candy, and—of course—chocolate chip cookies are always on the menu. And the best part? Everyone’s invited.
Since the early 1990s, Thacher has been hosting Open House, welcoming the school community into the Head of School home for a night of games, food, friendship, and connection. Firmly rooted in tradition now more than 30 years later, Kara and Jeff Hooper P ’23, ’25 continue this beloved event, opening their home and hearts to all students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors on almost every weekend of the school year. Phones are left
behind to help guests remain present, shoes are left on the porch to help keep the carpets clean, and everyone pitches in to tidy up at the end of the night. Kids move freely from kitchen to yard to sofa and back, socializing and snacking in between games of chess or Bananagrams.
