Parent Communications

Thacher uses a range of print and electronic tools to communicate with parents throughout the school year, from news and multimedia about student life at Thacher to the less interesting but necessary administrative forms that must be updated annually. Following is an overview of parent communications you can expect to come your way from Thacher.
Thacher uses a range of print and electronic tools to communicate with parents throughout the school year, from news and multimedia about student life at Thacher to the less interesting but necessary administrative forms that must be updated annually. Following is an overview of parent communications you can expect to come your way from Thacher.

Print Publications
In addition to the various letters, summer mailings, and forms you will receive throughout the year, you can expect several major publications.

Thacher—Published in the Spring and Fall, this magazine helps alumni, parents, and other members of the Thacher community stay in touch with the School and with one another.

Student/Parent Handbook—This must-read summer mailing is packed with important information about School rules, policies, and expectations; along with an A to Z guide to all things Thacher.

Community Directory—Distributed at Fall Family Weekend, this is Thacher's own phone book and more, including contact information for faculty, staff, and parents.

Annual Fund Report—This fall publication reports on the giving that sustains Thacher and its programs.

Parents Postscript—A parent’s keepsake of the academic year, this summer arrival includes photos of the year and is accompanied by tributes to the departing class.

Electronic Communications
Like the rest of the world, we at Thacher are adjusting our habits to make wise use of available resources and to take advantage of new communications technologies. In the process, we continue to seek the right balance between print and electronic communications, doing our best to find the most appropriate tool for each of our many communications jobs.

In addition to occasional e-mail messages from School administrators, we use the following electronic vehicles to communicate with you.

The Thacher Website (public)
The Thacher website can be thought of as two sites in one. The public site (www.thacher.org) is where we post information that can be seen by the general public. There, in addition to a detailed overview of the School and its programs, you can find:
  • Regularly updated school news items
  • A detailed school calendar
  • Athletic schedules and scores
  • Photo and video galleries
  • Useful tips from parents, for parents
  • Information about businesses and services in the Ojai area
  • FAQs for parents of day students
  • Information about whom to contact about what
myThacher (community website)
The "Parents" link (in the upper right corner of the Thacher home page) takes you to the "myThacher" section of the site, where you can gain access to both public content and secure content that is available only to members of the Thacher community with user accounts. This is where you can find information tailored to parents—some of it (grade reports, for example) visible only to you personally.

The myThacher pages duplicate some of the information on the public site (such as news stories and calendar items). Some myThacher pages present information specific to certain audiences based on their roles (parents, students, faculty, staff, alumni, etc.). The website distinguishes between these different groups to customize the information seen by any particular user.

Following is a list of other pages in the Parents section of the site along with a brief description of their contents. (Before you can access these tools, you'll need to know how to log in to the myThacher pages. If you don't already know how, e-mail Sara Edwards (sedwards@thacher.org), and equip yourself to take full advantage of the Thacher site.)
  • College Counseling—Download recent data about Thacher student test results and college placement.
  • Big Gyimkhana and Parents Auction—Information about how you can participate in this important fundraising and community-building event.
  • Grades, Comments & Schedules—Private information about your Thacher student.
  • Handbooks—This page contains the Thacher Riders' Handbook in online and downloadable PDF formats as well as the School's Camping Manual.
CdeP Connection
Though it looks and behaves much like a website, CdeP Connection is a monthly e-mail we send to parents during the school year. These "pushpage" e-mails may duplicate some website content, but their main purpose is to call your attention to relevant and timely information, highlight items of interest on the website, and connect you through the site to information about your child and the School.

As you become familiar with these communications tools, we hope they will provide a useful and enjoyable way to keep up with life at Thacher. Please let us know, however, if you have ideas for ways that we can make it easier for you to find the information you want.
