Many Happy Returns: Reunion 2010

Perfect weather + hundreds of alumni, family, friends, and faculty = an excellent Reunion 2010.
It was a gorgeous weekend here at Casa de Piedra thanks to perfect weather and, especially, the hundreds of alumni, family members, friends, and faculty who participated in Reunion 2010. It all began on Friday midday with CdeP 1960 sharing a special luncheon to celebrate their 50th graduation anniversary. As they enjoyed the view from the common room of the new HIll Dormitory, members of eleven more classes gradually drove through the front gate and scattered throughout the campus to meet and greet and enjoy the pool, fields, hills, barns, and more.

The weekend officially kicked off with Friday dinner celebrations throughout campus, followed by a dessert extravaganza, and live music on the Pergola. Members of the classes of 1945, 1955, and 1960 were welcomed at the Mulligan Home for an evening of remembrance and reaquaintance in their beautiful garden. The Class of 1985 joined Molly CdeP 1985 and Derick Perry for dinner at their home in the new Lower School dormitory. And CdeP 2000 were hosted by Kurt and Alice Meyer for dinner at Los Padres Dormitory, the rockin' place to be for the weekend. Eventually, everyone joined the party on the Pergola to enjoy the sunset and each other long into the night.

In addition to the many recreational opportunities available on Saturday morning, Christine Carter CdeP 1990 and Bill Logan CdeP 1970 educated and entertained dozens of alumni with presentations on their fields of work and passion. What a privilege to hear Christine share her research findings and personal experience on the subject of happiness and culture and how they relate to parenting, business, and just about every area of our lives. (If you missed her talk or want to know more, you can easily find her newly published book, Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents.) Bill Logan presented the documentary Dirt! The Movie to a highly impressed audience on the big screen in the Milligan Center for the Performing Arts. The documentary was based on his book Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth, the second in a series, starting with Oak: The Frame of Civilization, and soon to be followed by another, on the subject of air.

Saturday afternoon's activities were highlighted by Michael Mulligan sharing the "State of the School" and Jack Huyler regaling many with his vast memory bank Thacher history in the Margaret Appenzeller Huyler Library Courtyard. Hundreds also enjoyed horseback riding, a co-ed soccer game (and watching the tied-score World Cup game between the U.S. and England), and trapshooting with coaches and alumni parents Steve Kanaly and Robert Torres. Top-scoring trapshooters were: Brian Carter CdeP 2005 with 21/25 for the individual score, and Ryan Church, Parker Lohman, TJ Bermant, Peter Richards, and Brian Carter, all CdeP 2005, for team score.

Donning the dressware reminiscent of hundreds of formal dinners, alumni and guests joined the traditional Saturday evening banquet, starting with a cocktail hour and class photos, during which wonderful musical entertainment was provided by Mary Anne and Ames Anderson CdeP 1970. Under a big white tent, led by the Master of Ceremonies Bob Gardner CdeP 1960, classmates shared stories and songs and words of inspiration as they led everyone in a series of toasts to their alma mater. Those who brilliantly led the toasts were:

The Sunday morning Memorial Service at the Outdoor Chapel was facilitated by Randy Labbe CdeP 1960 who recognized Thacher's war heroes, in addition to those who have passed on from each of the 0 and 5 year classes.  Three classes also met separately to honor the passing of Rob CdeP 1990 and Beth CdeP 1994 Williams (with parents Dave CdeP 1960 and Janet Williams present), Brooke Halsey CdeP 2000, and Colin Parker CdeP 1905.

Thanks to all, near and far, who joined their reunion celebration, adding to the beauty and revelry of of the gathering, especially those who traveled the farthest to get to the Ojai Valley.
