Born to Run: The Horrors of Horse Racing

In the last century, horse racing has strayed from its origins of being a leisurely display of wealth. It has become commodified. As millions of dollars are pumped into racetracks year-round from high-risk gambling, horse racing has reached an extreme never before seen. With this, animal welfare becomes less of a priority. Simultaneously, universal standards of care for working animals are being raised to higher standards. This has caused the industry to come under fire as friction is created between this age-old traditional sport and new-age animal rights activists. Looking to the future, can horse racing survive the standards of animal welfare? With a tradition of mass slaughter, inhumane training methods, and the moral dilemma that racing creates, the sport is getting harder to justify, especially as the audience for it shrinks. Without intense reform, horse racing will likely continue to lose support, and without a fanbase, funding will shrink, ultimately driving the industry into the ground.
