Architects of Rhythm: Black Women and the Evolution of R&B, 1950s–2000s

When you think about R&B, you might think about how much it’s changed in the late 20th century or about the popular black male artists who’ve made an impact on the genre. But throughout history, Black female artists have often been overlooked and under appreciated for their important work, and unfortunately, it continues to be that way. So one might wonder, how should we view black female artists within the history of R&B from the 1950s to the 2000s? Black female artists should not only be appreciated as instrumental contributors at par with, if not more impactful than, their male counterparts of the R&B evolution, but should be appreciated for being able to explain and explore the black female experience through their music. In my presentation I will be performing some of the most impactful R&B songs that came out of this half century from the most important black female artists of the 50s to 2000s.
