Can You Hear it? How Sound Creates Meaning in Film

Sound in film plays the important role of shaping the viewers’ interpretation of visuals. To uncover the ways sound successfully shapes viewers perception, this presentation will look into how film uses sound to create meaning and elicit viewer response. The two types of sound in film are diegetic and non-diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is sound that comes from within the world of a film whereas non-diegetic sound is sound that only the audience can hear. Diegetic sound immerses viewers in the film, creating an emotional connection between the audience and the characters. Non-diegetic sound, typically in the form of music, is used to convey the internal emotions of a character and set the tone of a film. Diegetic and non-diegetic sound both influence the way an audience interprets the emotional undertone of the visuals, influencing their overall takeaway of a film. Silence in film can be just as impactful as sound. Cinematic silence, or the absence of other sound layers, forces viewers to tune into subtle sound cues, making louder sounds more impactful. Cinematic silence also influences the overall atmosphere of a film, and can either create a feeling of comfort or a feeling of anticipation. Finally, the score and soundtrack of a film are used to further the film’s narrative, shaping how viewers interpret emotional scenes. Overall, sound in film is extremely important for conveying emotion and eliciting a response from viewers.
