The Art of the Heist: An Investigation of Art Theft as a Growing Industry

50,000 - 100,000 works of art are stolen each year. This amounts to $6 billion - $8 billion of loss annually. However, when we think about art theft, we typically focus on the romantic way it’s portrayed in movies and TV shows. It’s one of the few crimes where we often find ourselves rooting for the thieves. My research investigates the reality of art theft and its impact on the world, especially as it becomes a more prevalent phenomenon.
