We know that teenagers are hard-wired to take risks: harmful, healthy, or otherwise.
The key is to channel energy into positive, calibrated risk-taking that furthers growth, self-discovery, and... well, fun. Our program is designed to allow students to deepen their existing strengths and also stretch beyond the familiar to discover new areas of strength.
As a result, you will join a group of peers who feel the same way, embracing everything our Horse and Outdoor Programs offer, and beyond. The kind of kid who is willing to climb on the back of a horse for the first time and see where that leads. The kind willing to endure the hardship of a heavy pack and an uphill trail for the payoff of a High Sierra vista and a meal shared around a campfire with some worn-out companions.
When it comes to academics and intellectual risk-taking, our students spend time learning in classrooms where there are no back rows and where they regularly face complex, interdisciplinary learning challenges that don't come from a textbook.
Will you play a varsity sport or take the lead in the winter musical? At Thacher, you can do both. We lay the foundation with required Arts and Athletics programs, which set students up to take on activities they’ve never tried before and test their own boundaries. And we structure our schedule to encourage students to participate in a wide variety of activities rather than specialize.
The result of all this positive risk-taking? Our students are free to discover passions and talents they never knew they had, and then carry into the world a solid, lasting confidence—the kind that comes from facing, and overcoming, real challenges with real consequences.
