Thacher takes a day to give back to the community.
Thacher's community service program is thriving with close to 50 students involved in more than 10 community service opportunities during the winter trimester alone. The program, run for many years by Molly Perry and her student leaders (this year's club heads are Samantha Baird '16, Emma Herzig '16, and Reade Rossman '16), is available to all students every trimester. Students can tutor at the nearby grade school during a free period, or sing to the elderly during dinner, or volunteer at local organizations like the Humane Society; and the list goes on.
The program has expanded even further to include all members of the Thacher community in a Community Service Day meant to expand upon the excellent work being done every day by Thacher students. Community Service Day opens up even more members of our community to an opportunity to offer their time and aid to deserving causes.
With classes cancelled this past Tuesday, the 2016 Community Service Day involved the entire student body and many members of the faculty and staff. Students could chose from over 25 different options that included: building a chicken coop, cleaning up trash from local beaches, picking oranges to donate to Food Forward, weeding at nearby Earthrine Farms (a supplier of the Thacher Dining Hall), repairing sections of Thacher trails, and many more.
Some fun facts and commentary from the day:
"The kids were focused and hard working, but also upbeat and fun to spend three hours weeding with!"—Bo Manson
"My group went great. We worked really hard. I think they left feeling very good about the work they did and the cause they served. 24.5 boxes [of oranges] picked!"—Kara Hooper
"Chivas Goat Farm was very appreciative and gave the students a little bag of soap and lip balm at the end. The work was dirty farm work (cleaning, mucking, raking, painting, etc.), but fun. The students cuddled 18 hour-old kids, surrounded by pigs, tortoises, dogs, and other animals. They loved it."—Bob St. George
"I love how Food Share gave us the number of meals we were able to provide—1800+. Pretty powerful. I think we sorted approximately 2,000 pounds of food."—Ann Merlini
"It was a pleasure to work with this group of students, and we were very impressed by how quickly they finished planting everything! Just for fun, here's a list of the various things we planted today: 200 galangal plants, 10 sweetflag plants, 10 turmeric plants, 800 naturalizing daffodil bulbs, 200 naturalizing tulip bulbs, 200 'Miami' allium bulbs, 15 allium obliquum bulbs, 10 allium nectaroscordum bulbs, 10 white spider lily bulbs, 400 iris reticulata bulbs, 300 giant crocus bulbs, 100 tritelia and ixia corn lily bulbs, 100 tiger lily bulbs, 200 Asiatic lily bulbs, 100 species lily bulbs, 200 trumpet lily bulbs. A grand total of 2,855 plants/bulbs!" —Ed Bennett
Steven Yoo '19, Olivia Edmondson '18, Conor McCune '18, Toto Van Son '16, Jordan Perry '17, and Maya Wilcox '17 did a wonderful job helping our students with a difficult task, and assisting me in the management of two class periods. They were enthusiastic, effective and patient, even when the questions were not math related. I hope to see students come back next year!—Magda Perkins
