MLK Day

Thacher honors the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Each year, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thacher offers some type of special program that connects in some way to the mission and impact of the civil rights leader.

This year, the community gathered together on Sunday night to watch the film I'm Not Racist...Am I? This documentary follows a group of twelve teenagers in New York who volunteered to participate in a series of workshops that address topics of race and privilege in the United States. While these are not easy topics of conversation, the film illustrated the necessity of such discussions. Following the film, the student body divided into two groups—freshmen/sophomores and juniors/seniors—to discuss their reactions to the film. Facilitated by professionals, students were able to share their thoughts and feelings on the film as well as some of the larger issues it addressed. In the days since the screening, formal and informal discussions have continued in classrooms, around the tables in the Dining Hall, and in the dormitories as students and faculty process these complex issues together.

Leading up to MLK Day, the student heads of the Black Student Union offered a special opportunity to visit UCLA's Fowler Museum—a museum that explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas—past and present. Interest was clearly piqued, as more than forty students signed up for the trip. Students enjoyed the opportunity to venture off-campus and learn more about different cultures through art.
