Into The Woods

Faculty and students depart for a week of camping.
Soon after their arrival on campus, students and faculty disperse for the first of two annual camping trips. These six-day Extra-Day Trips (EDTs) are an integral part of Thacher's mission and Outdoor Program. Nothing bookends the school year quite like some time spent "unplugged," reconnecting with nature.

In recent years, director of the Outdoor Program Brian Pidduck CdeP 1992 developed a specific curriculum to coincide with these extended wilderness trips. There are many skills to learn in the outdoors, but this year the students will focus their attention on learning to read and navigate using a topographic map. What may look like hieroglyphics to some, will be easily translated as hills, valleys, rivers, and lakes to our students. Additionally, students will be asked to hone their awareness of the group and their awareness of self by asking the question: What do I (we) really need?

Given that Southern California remains in severe drought, many of our trips ventured far afield this fall. Many backpacking and horsecamping trips headed north to enjoy the cool running waters in the Sierra, and the freshmen got their first taste of a Thacher EDT in the annual expedition to Golden Trout Camp.
