A Lesson in being Horsewyse

Natural horsemanship clinician Pat Wyse instructs faculty and students.
Professional development for Thacher's faculty is an important part of maintaining the rigor of the School and introducing new and innovative thinking. It can also be rejuvenating, stimulating, and exciting. In this most recent professional development opportunity, the horse faculty were put through their paces, and in a sense, "rode in the boots" of their students.

For a full week, members of the horse faculty participated in lessons with horseman and clinician Pat Wyse, a master of the Advanced Basic Handle. The Basic Handle is a method of horsemanship that serves as the basis of how our young riders are instructed at Thacher. The methods and maneuvers taught through this system are meant to advance the understanding of the relationship between horse and rider. Riders learn quickly through this system about how their horse moves and how to move with them.

Mr. Wyse held three sessions each of the four days he was on campus. Faculty took advantage of the morning and early afternoon sessions, while student riders populated the afternoon sessions. All participants honed their skills and improved upon their relationships with their equine partners.
