One of the most destructive natural disasters in U.S. history inspires students to take action and make a difference beyond the gates of Casa de Piedra.
When Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005, the storm surged into history as one of the most destructive natural disasters the United States had ever seen. With sustained winds reaching Category 3 strength and a storm surge that overwhelmed miles of Gulf Coast shoreline, Katrina caused catastrophic damage across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. In New Orleans, the failure of the federal levee system led to flooding that covered 80 percent of the city, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee and leaving entire neighborhoods unrecognizable. More than 1,800 people lost their lives, and hundreds of thousands were displaced—many for months or years.
