When Phoebe Barkan CdeP 2003 stood beneath the lights of Seoul's Olympic Park, preparing to climb at the IFSC Para Climbing World Championships, the moment felt surreal.
Thousands of miles from home, wearing a Team USA uniform and competing against the world’s best para climbers, Barkan found herself reflecting less on medals and more on the path that had brought her there.
“Five years ago, I never would have identified as an athlete,” she says. “I certainly never imagined I’d be traveling internationally with my family for sport climbing.”
