Girls’ Varsity Tennis Makes History

Team earns CIF Champion title for second straight year.
The girls’ varsity tennis team recently accomplished something that has eluded every other team in Thacher’s history: They took home the CIF Champion title in two back to back powerhouse years. In a division that included over 100 teams and a five round tournament that included opponents that all had enrollments of over 1,000, this was no small feat.

The final win came last Friday when the team beat Chaminade 13-5 in the CIF Championship match, thanks to some very strong showings across the team. Libby Kern ’17 swept all of her singles sets and Jasmin Arculli ’17 and Cara Dienst ’17 and Bea Pierrepont ’18 and Olivia de Polo ’18 swept their doubles sets. The team also picked up wins from Sydney de Polo ’17 in singles and Reina Nadeau ’18 and Piper Stacey ’19 in doubles.

The accomplishment represents a logical outcome for a team that has demonstrated their dedication and talent again and again over the past four years. Theyve won three league championships, earned an overall record of 66-9, seen teammates take home six MVP awards in doubles and singles, and gone to the CIF finals three straight years in a row (another history-making accomplishment).

I would like to commend the work of my four senior captains, Libby Kern, Cara Dienst, Jasmin Arculli, and Sydney de Polo, Head Coach and Athletic Director Pete Fagan shared via email. All four girls brought a different strength and skill set to our team. Whether it was in the form of how they practiced, how they mentored the younger players, or how they conducted themselves both on and off the court.

This leadership was instrumental in our playoff run, he continued. They knew what to expect from previous years and calmed the nerves of others before each match. The attitude and commitment of this team from day one was to never give up and always improve. Whats remarkable is how much we improved from the beginning of the season but also how much we improved from match to match during the tournament. During warm-ups before the finals, I couldnt believe how strong each team member, including the subs, was hitting. A true testament to their commitment to the program.

Congratulations to these two-time CIF Champions; Go Toads!
