As various referees and opposing coaches have offered over the years, there is no better basketball environment on a Friday night in Ventura County than in Thacher's classic, old-school Voit Gymnasium. As such, the boys’ varsity program benefits from a committed school community that regularly brings great energy, excitement, and support to all home contests.
Each year, the varsity plays a demanding non-league schedule to prepare it for the tight competition that league play presents. Focusing on skillful execution, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the tenacity to overcome any challenge, students find success and growth on the court, win or lose. About those wins, though: Voit Gym holds memories of countless, thrilling victories, and Thacher’s boys' basketball history is filled with many league championships and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoff berths. While the team's consecutive playoff streak was snapped recently at 16 years, the Toads once again advanced to the playoffs in 2024 and hope to start a new, lengthy streak.
About Coach Carney: Coach Carney has a long association with the sport of basketball and began leading Thacher's varsity in 2002. He treasures his time in Voit Gym and the opportunity to coach truly wonderful young men who give their heart and soul to the program. He is also grateful for the support the community provides the team. He has won league coach-of-the year many times, and is also a CIF Southern Section Coach of the Year recipient. When asked, Carney will say with a smile that he values the lifelong relationships he maintains with former players.
Donald grew up playing club basketball with Manchester Magic out of the John Amaechi Basketball Centre in Whalley Range, Manchester. He’s played for the England U16s and U18s in several European tournaments and on the varsity basketball teams at both Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, California. While at Pomona College Donald spent summers coaching middle and high school kids at the Pomona-Pitzer summer basketball camp. At Thacher, Donald was assistant coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team for two years before stepping in as head coach this year.
Aaron teaches Latin, serves as the dorm head for the sophomore boys, and works as an assistant coach for Varsity Football and Varsity Boys’ Basketball. In past years at Thacher, he has also taught English and provided musical accompaniment for various student productions on piano and bass. He attended Groton School, where he won the school’s Classics Prize. Aaron received his bachelor’s degree in English from Princeton University and later earned a master’s degree from Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. He is currently working on his M. Ed. from the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University. After his first two years of teaching at Cushing Academy, near his longtime Massachusetts home, Aaron came west to Thacher seeking a new adventure, but committed to remaining within a boarding school community. Soon after his arrival at Thacher, he met his future wife, Theana, already a member of the Thacher faculty for four years previous to his arrival. Theana and Aaron now live in Los Padres dorm with their children—Gavin, Zoey, and Luke—and two dogs.
