Tennis has a long history of here at Thacher. When Sherman Day’s brother, William, arrived on campus fresh out of Yale in late 1895, he led the men’s tennis team as runner-up in National Intercollegiate singles play and college doubles champion. Before long it was one of the most popular sports at school and throughout the Ojai Valley. In fact, William was the founder of the oldest amateur tennis tournament in the United States, the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament, which to this day remains the largest amateur tennis tournament in the country.
For a few days each spring, Thacher’s ten well-maintained hardcourts play host to competitive matches between nationally ranked players in that tournament. While several Thacher students do compete in The Ojai each year, that’s just a few days in the life of our tennis program. Ojai’s wonderful weather provides a great setting for year-round play whether the occasion is simply sharing volleys with a friend on a weekend or competing at the varsity level in the highly competitive Southern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation. With a full JV and varsity schedule, the tennis program has a home for boys who are just learning the sport as well as those who would like to play in college. The varsity team’s success has consistently earned them playoff berths, and in the century of tennis here at Thacher, our teams have won numerous championships and sent scores of young men to play at the college level.
Notice of nondiscriminatory policy as to students: The Thacher School admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School.
