Thacher’s Voit Gym has hosted a thriving girls’ basketball program for three decades. During that span, while several teams have enjoyed success by any standard, the program has always gauged its sense of achievement on teaching sound fundamentals, creating tight-knit teams, and focusing on hard work, sportsmanship, and resilience in the face of tough obstacles.
Our teams enjoy the benefits of expert coaching, great facilities, and a committed school community that fills the gym with energy, excitement, and support of its teams.
It's no wonder that the bleachers have been packed in recent years. With its recent string of three straight seasons in the CIF Southern Section’s Top Ten Poll, three league championships, and two trips through the playoffs all the way to the CIF Championship game, the fans here at Thacher have had lots to cheer about. Many girls from those teams have earned the honor of being selected for All-CIF teams and several have gone on to play at the college level at schools including Colorado, Emory and Williams.
Whitney is passionate not only about teaching the fundamentals of the game on both an individual and a team level, but also about supporting girls in developing the strong work ethic, teamwork, communication skills, competitive drive, strength in the face of adversity, and sportsmanship that Thacher values so highly. With a lifelong love of the sport of basketball, fueled by having played at an elite level in both high school and college, she brings focus, dedication, experience, and fun to this program. As a student at Thacher Whitney was on the varsity team for four years and was captain for two, during which time the team earned two Condor league championships, one Southern Section championship and one runner-up to the Southern Section championship. She was also First Team All-CIF for two years. At Williams College she played on the varsity team all four years and served as captain during her senior season. The team took two trips to the NCAA tournament, including one trip to Sweet 16. She was named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team for two years, an honor available to juniors and seniors.
A 1983 Thacher graduate, Derick earned his BA from Dartmouth College and worked in retail management before joining the Thacher faculty as a teacher of English. During his tenure as a teacher, he was also the dorm head for Middle School and Lower School at various points. In addition, he coached track and field and girls’ varsity basketball. After 16 years in the classroom and on the sidelines, Derick joins the development team as the Director of Annual Giving and Special Gifts. He looks forward to working with all the members of the Thacher family to “do the best work in the world that we can.” Derick lives on campus with his wife, Molly Twichell Perry (CdeP 1985), and their two daughters.
